Taking account of those rating themselves "less interested" (6.7 percent of men versus 10.9 percent of women), the net margin of greater interest in the news is 44.3 percent for men and 30.8 percent of women. This gender skew pertains to all major fields of interest in the survey; higher net percentages of men than women rate themselves more interested.

The findings come from an online "mood monitor" survey of 388 Americans across the country that was commissioned by global integrated marketing communications agency Euro RSCG Worldwide in February 2010. MicroDialogue collected and analyzed the data.

Regarding their own local politics, a net 29.4 percent of men have become more interested, compared with 16.7 percent of women. Men even show a net increase in interest in the local politics of other areas (net 10.8 percent more), whereas women show a net decrease of interest (net 6.2 percent less). Moving the focus up to the politics of their own state, there's a surge of greater interest with net 47.9 percent more men and net 30.2 percent more women. In terms of the politics of other states, net 23.1 percent of men and 9.4 percent of women are more interested. There are clear, strong increases in interest for domestic politics in general, although the margin is far higher with men than with women (net 42.3 percent men versus net 24.5 percent women).

The Great Recession and head-spinning news from Wall Street have pushed economy and finance firmly center stage for Americans. Huge net margins of 63.4 percent of men and 52.1 percent of women rate themselves more interested in these topics than they were 12 to 18 months ago. Business and corporations have also come in for higher levels of interest, although they're far more of a guy thing: Net 42.3 percent of men are more interested, compared with net 16 percent of women.

It's no surprise that health care has garnered far more interest over the past 12 to 18 months. Among men, 67.6 percent are more interested, and among women 61.5 percent are more interested. What is surprising is that a small minority rate themselves less interested in the issue: 6.2 percent of men and 8.3 percent of women. This suggests some Americans have been turned off of the whole subject, despite--or perhaps because of--the health-care reform tug-of-war in Congress and across the media.

Although there are consistently higher percentages of men who are more interested in the big issues, there are consistently higher percentages of women who feel growing disapproval with the issues compared with 12 to 18 months ago. Suspected drug dealers abandoned a car containing 16 pounds of marijuana Wednesday when they spotted police on their street.

OGDEN -- Police in Weber County broke up a drug distribution operation at an Ogden home Thursday.

They arrested two men and one juvenile and seized thousands of dollars worth of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Agents from the Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force had been observing the home at 2979 Adams Ave. for more than a month, said Sgt. Troy Burnett.

"Simplify" was the topic of our first philosophy club meeting recently.

Eleven curious men and women ranging in age from 25 to 85 gathered to see where this experiment would go.

As would be expected, it went all over the place. But, although we didn't solve any world problems, we managed to focus on how to live a more simple life.

The benefits are many - especially to one's health - but simplifying doesn't come as easy to all of us.

This past weekend, my wife, Kris, and I drove up to rural Harpers Ferry, Iowa, to visit a couple we know. Last month, they bought a cabin within watching distance of the eagles that fly over the Mississippi River. It's their weekend and summer retreat.

Both are about 50 and both are teachers - one at college and one at high school - in the Madison, Wis., area. They drive the two hours to Iowa each weekend to "get away from it all."

And, they definitely simplify.

There is no television or computer in the sparsely furnished cabin. Eventually, they'll probably get both, but obviously they can do without them. They don't text on iPhones or Tweet - at home or at the cabin. Laptops are nowhere to be found, either. But they love their Sirius Satellite Radio.

What's more simple than that? It's what most of our ancestors enjoyed in a day when our senses weren't constantly bombarded by a multitude of technological gadgets and messages.

We just got the earnings at this time. But it looks like overall, a beat by UnitedHealth over the last 52 weeks. It is up about 40 percent.

Another part of this that we want to tell you a little bit about is also the guidance, which is also important for eBay and Starbucks. Last night, we are seeing that it is reaffirming its 2010 guidance, of 2.90 to 3.10 a share. We'll see how that compares to the expectation by Reuters, which is $3.06. So that's in the range, but slightly below the estimates by analysts for the 2010 year share for UnitedHealth.

So we'll keep an eye on this in the pre-market. Remember, we've got a lot of big earnings names. We have a lot of other big names today as well, among them being Goldman Sachs, Union Pacific, PNC Bank, Key Corp and Fifth Third as well. SCOTT WALDROM's face dropped when he heard Western Force openside flanker David Pocock is injured.

Waldrom wasn't pondering a blow to the opposition, but instead was ruing a lost opportunity to prove himself against Australia's best.

"I didn't know Pocock was out. That's a shame," the 29-year-old said yesterday. "I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to playing Pocock and proving myself against him really."

In his fourth season as a Hurricane, Waldrom is a man on a mission.

He makes no bones about the fact he desperately wants a chance to add to his single appearance for the All Blacks.

Since that day in Munster, the Wellingtonian has suffered a series of injuries, the worst being a broken bone in his back at the end of last year's Super 14.

That injury ruined any chance of being selected on the All Blacks' end-of- year tour, and it has rankled with Waldrom ever since.

The opening round of the Super 14 has only increased Waldrom's desire after he was involved in a defensive mix- up with first-five Willie Ripia that allowed Blues first-five Stephen Brett to cruise through for an early try.

"I would have been pretty upset if I hadn't got the chance to put things right [against the Force]," he said. "I wasn't happy with my first performance all round. I probably cruised a wee bit and this is a chance to prove it was just an off night."

BRYN EVANS could well relate to his openside's angst.

The lock will start his first match since a prolapsed disc in his back sent him reeling off the radar after two test appearances in the middle of last year.

MOST Scottish men are unlikely to enjoy a healthy retirement, according to new government figures.
