Obama holds meeting with the Dalai Lama

Hair extensions

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Obama personally welcomed the Dalai Lama to the White House Thursday and lauded his goals for the Tibetan people, but he kept their get-together off-camera and low- key in a bid to avoid inflaming tensions with China.

At the risk of angering Beijing, Obama did tell the exiled spiritual leader that he backs the preservation of Tibet's culture and supports human rights for its people.

China early today protested the meeting, saying the United States had interfered in Chinese domestic affairs and demanding it take steps to improve ties.

The Dalai Lama is seen by Beijing as a separatist who seeks to overthrow Chinese rule of Tibet. There was no welcome fanfare on Thursday, nor a public appearance with the president. The White House released only a single official picture.

The Dalai Lama did meet with reporters outside the White House, playfully tossing a bit of snow at them and declaring himself "very happy" with the visit.

FDA issues warnings for some asthma drugs

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is taking steps to curb use of some long-acting asthma drugs taken by millions, issuing safety restrictions Thursday to lower an uncommon but potentially Clip on hair extensions life- threatening risk that asthma could worsen suddenly.

The Food and Drug Administration's warnings cover the drugs Advair, Symbicort, Foradil and Serevent. The FDA said they should be used only by asthmatics who can't control their lung disease with other medications -- and then only for the shortest time possible.

Why? These four drugs contain an ingredient that relaxes muscles around stressed airways, called a long-acting beta agonist or LABA. While they're very helpful at preventing day-to-day symptoms for some patients, the way LABA-containing drugs work also sometimes masks that inflammation is building in the airways, a condition that could lead to a serious asthma attack.

Nor should LABA-containing drugs ever be used without simultaneous use of a different asthma-controlling medication, such as an inhaled corticosteroid, the FDA said.

Romney takes swipe at Obama, Democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican Mitt Romney blistered President Obama for a squandered first year of policy failures and broken promises on Thursday, informally auditioning before a key part of the GOP base for the chance to challenge the Democrat in 2012.

"President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and their team have failed the American people, and that is why their majority will be out the door,"
embroidered patches Romney told a gathering of conservatives, a certain critical constituency in the upcoming Republican primary fight.

"When it comes to pinning blame, pin the tail on the donkeys," Romney quipped.

Conservatives attending the annual Conservative Political Action Conference went wild when newly elected Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., made a surprise appearance to introduce Romney. Romney is seen by observers as the most formidable Republican in 2012, given that he's run before and the GOP has a history of nominating the loser of the last nomination fight.

NEW DELHI: Army is going in for a major induction of BrahMos Block-II land-attack cruise missiles (LACM), which have been designed as "precision strike weapons" capable of hitting small targets in cluttered urban environments.

Sources say the defence ministry will ``soon'' approach the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, for the green signal to arm the Army with two regiments of the BrahMos Block-II land-attack cruise missiles (LACM).

Swift induction of BrahMos Block-II is necessary because Pakistan Army is inducting its nuclear-capable Babur LACM, developed with China's help to have a 500-km strike range, in large numbers. BrahMos-II can potentially be used for ``surgical strikes'' at terror training camps across the border without causing collateral damage.

One regiment of the 290-km range BrahMos-I variant, which consists of 67 missiles, five mobile autonomous launchers on 12x12 Tatra vehicles and two mobile command posts, among other equipment, is already operational in the Army. It had earlier ordered two BrahMos regiments in the first phase at a cost of Rs 8,352 crore.

The BrahMos Block-II variant has been developed to take out a specific small target, with a low radar cross-section, in a multi-target environment.

The air-breathing missile, which flies at speeds up to 2.8 Mach (almost three times the speed of sound), of course, does not come cheap. With `multi-spectral seekers' for `target-discriminating capabilities', each missile costs upwards of Rs 25 crore.

Incidentally, Indian Navy too has inducted BrahMos's naval variant on some warships, having earlier placed orders worth Rs 711 crore for 49 firing units.

While these missiles are fired from `inclined launchers', Navy is also gearing up to induct `vertical launchers'.

This is significant since `vertical launchers' are fitted under the warship's deck, protecting them from the atmospheric conditions and imparting some stealth to the weapon system. It also allows the missile to be fired in any direction.

Two such modules, with 16 missiles, are to fitted in each of the three Kolkata-class P-15A destroyers being built at Mazagon Docks at a cost of Rs 11,662 crore.

BrahMos will also arm the three more Talwar-class `stealth' frigates being built at Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad (Russia) under a Rs 5,514-crore project.

But the work on submarine and air-launched versions of BrahMos is still going quite slow. While talks with Russia are now in the final stages for BrahMos' integration with Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, the missile will be tested for the first time from submersible pontoon launchers this year in preparation for their induction on submarines.

India and Russia have also begun preliminary work on a ``hypersonic'' BrahMos-2 missile capable of flying at a speed between 5 and 7 Mach, as reported earlier.

The armed forces' eventual plan, of course, is to have nuclear-tipped LACMs, with strike ranges over 1,500 km. Unlike ballistic missiles like Agni, cruise missiles do not leave the atmosphere and are powered and guided throughout their flight path.

Cruise missiles, which can evade enemy radars and air defence systems since they fly at low altitudes, are also much cheaper as well as more accurate and easier to operate than ballistic missiles. For Reprint Rights:

ELLENSBURG -- Nate Aid recalls being the poor kid with mismatched clothes and hand-me-down shoes in elementary school.

In middle school, the popular kids called him "white trash" and taunted him for being poor, he said.

Tired of the name calling, Aid dropped out of high school and joined a gang.

"I felt accepted by them," said Aid, a 25-year-old Ellensburg native. "I committed crimes to continue feeling the love they showed me."

Starting as a teen, Aid was repeatedly arrested for assault, burglary and unlawful imprisonment and spent much of his life in jail.

"Now I'm a convicted felon and I have limited options," said Aid. "I can't vote. I have to pay off restitution. I'll never have gun rights or be able to teach."

The odds would appear to be against Aid making a meaningful effort to improve his life. But that was before he was approved for Central Washington University's STAR program.

"I cried after I was accepted. I called everybody," said Aid, now a freshman. (The acceptance letter) "was like saying I had a chance. I couldn't believe it."

Aid was first picked up by police at age 11 for skipping school. But instead of scaring him straight, getting locked up became familiar. So did gang life. He began hanging out with gang members when he was 14, and he was rushed at 17.

"I got taken to the ground and beaten up," Aid said. "Then we all smoked a joint to celebrate my addition to the family."

Aid spent his days partying, drinking and doing drugs. Fighting became routine. Once he was involved in a stabbing on Thanksgiving day.

"You are mentally, spiritually and emotionally hollow," Aid said. "It's gang life. That's how we take things. If someone fights or gets stabbed, or there's a shooting, it comes with the territory."

"Everyone around me was in prison or dying," he said. "I didn't want to live that way, but I didn't know how to change it. I felt hopeless."

He wasn't there when his daughter was born, or his son. He missed their first steps, their first words. After a year in jail reflecting on life, he realized he didn't want to miss any more.

"They are an extension of my soul," he said. "That's pretty powerful. It was my kids that made me realize I'd be missing out on replica clothing a lot."

Aid quit the gang, quit drinking and stopped doing drugs. Except for one slip, he said he hasn't used meth in more than three years. Alcohol was tougher to give up, but he's been sober for a year.

"It's tough," he said. "Sometimes I miss the good parts of my life, how I had power, money and respect. Now I'm just another face in the crowd."

For more than three years, Aid made good money as a construction worker. But when the economy tanked, so did his paychecks.

He began studying and earned his GED last February. That, however, would not normally be enough to be accepted at a university. But he reached out to Carolyn Thurston, director of Central's STAR program, who he had met several years earlier through a mutual friend.

When she first met Aid, Thurston said he looked and acted like a gang member. Still, she sensed there was something special about him.

"My gut told me he would make it," said Thurston, who has spent h

RUBY Wax and Carol Vorderman compered a glitzy evening of music and mirth to help Coventry's most vulnerable kids.

About 500 people streamed down the red carpet at the Ricoh Arena, rubbing shoulders with Jack Nicholson and Audrey Hepburn - or rather their look-a-likes - during the Night At The Oscars Ball on Friday.

The aim of the NSPCC's Coventry Business Group was to raise at least pounds 50,000 on the night and to clockup a cool pounds 2million in its 16th year of fundraising.

Much of the cash - which will be poured into Boole House, in Whitefriars Street - was generated by an auction, which saw big bids for movie legend Charlie Chaplin's autograph and picture, and a signed spike from a shoe of the world's fastest man Usain Bolt.

Elliot Evans, the Coventry schoolkid who hit the big time with Britain's Got Talent, also sang at the blacktie event, which was sponsored by Jaguar Cars and the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce.

Goofing around before the show was Ruby rolex replica Wax.

The comedienne said: "I think I've been to Coventry before. I'm not sure. When you're touring everything's a haze. But seriously I've come back tonight because I know one of the people organising it, and because of course it's such a great charity. I just hope we raise the money we need. I'm sure we will."

Geoff Cousins, chairman of the NSPCC Coventry Business Group, and managing director of Jaguar Cars UK, was delighted by the show of support.

He said: "With the football going on
embroidered patches as well tonight, it feels like we've got about 20,000 people here.

"It's also great that Ruby and Carol have come up and done this, donating their time to help us.

"It's so important. All the money we raise in Coventry and Warwickshire stops in Coventry and Warwickshire."

Looking on with pride was Sir Nick Scheele, former chief executive of Jaguar, and ex-chancellor of Warwick University, who launched the fundraising initiative in 1993.

Lynae, 17, is an actress whose style steals the show. It's part grit, part glare and wall dramatic. Get a backstase pass to her fab fashion cues!

What celebs inspire your look?

My style icons are The Supremes. They always looked so classy. And those matching sequin dresses were to die for!

How has your style evolved over time?

When I was younger, I would wear matchy-matchy stuff. I would dress head-to-toe in one color. If I decided to wear pink, I would have a pink shirt, headband, purse, shoes--everything. Now I've learned the best outfits don't have to match.

What's the one thing in your closet you're obsessed with?

I cannot live without my pearl earrings. They're classic.

You're studying theater. Does that impact how you dress?

Acting affects my style in every way. When I'm performing, I have to take risks with characters, and that translates into my clothing. I have the confidence to wear whatever I want.

Lynae's best tips for outfits that earn an encore.

GO FOR COOL CONTRAST. Lynae's closet is filled with everything from acid-washed jeans to zebra-print socks. Her favorite way fake rolex to show off major-impact pieces? Piling on the layers. "Layering allows me to experiment," she confesses. "I can take a strapless dress I wore to a dance, put a shirt underneath it throw a sweater on, then go to class. It looks completely different." Popping on one Pave piece adds edge ... and creates a new outfit!

ALWAYS LOOK POLISHED. Even if you're a jeans-and-a-tee girl, you can steal a line from Lynae. This girl is all about details (check out her cute orange and white mani!). So opt for fab finishing touches, whether it's adding a belt or a boyfriend blazer. With a li'l effort, you can go from low-key to showstopper in a snap.

DON'T LIVE BY LABELS. What's In a name? Not much for the fiercely fashionable. "Sometimes I'll make a dress into a shirt by folding it over a belt," Lynae spills. Brilliant, especially if you have super-long less like our girl. Another secret? Wear a tank top backward (that's what Lynae did for this pic) to mix it up. "It gives the outfit mystery. People won't be able to bell what exactly you're wearing." Gotta applaud a girl who keeps 'em guessing!
