Vocally coached by the highly reputed Raffy Amaranto, Carmella was a finalist in ABS-CBN's Little Big Star in 2005 and became QTV 11's Pop Star Kid audition winner in May 2006.

POLE dancing? It didn't happen one night to Claudette Colbert. Katharine Hepburn only had to contend with a leopard and Cary Grant's lethal charm, while Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday merely had a deadline to worry about.

But such are the demands on contemporary comedy heroines that Tina Fey has to dress like a saloon girl and make like a fireman in Date Night.

The sacrifice is not in vain, as it leads to the most amusing scene in what should have been a far funnier film given the combined comedy heft of Fey and her co-star Steve Carell. While the stars of 30 Rock and The 40-Year-Old-Virgin glisten as brightly as one might expect, the rest of the movie is decidedly lacklustre.

Still, if you are having your own date night - an American custom which, like trick or treating and inadvisable foreign wars, seems to be gaining in popularity over here - Shawn Levy's picture is a safe enough bet.

Claire and Phil Foster (Fey and Carell) are from New Jersey. He's a tax lawyer, she's an estate agent, and they have two young children. Like Scorsese's After Hours, Date Night plays on the fear of being trapped in the big city, helpless, alone, and dancing to someone else's diabolical tune. For such films to work, the right kind of city has to be chosen. Being adrift in Manhattan as midnight approaches offers all kinds of narrative possibilities and scenic locations in which to look scared and confused. Being in the same situation in Glasgow has the makings of an episode of Taggart.

The two rear-most seats are sized more for children than adults but that's no surprise in a wagon that's medium-large rather than outright big.

City shoppers' electronic spending up in latest Christmas rush.

PALMERSTON NORTH shoppers are getting out the plastic card more often, but retailers had mixed fortunes in the Christmas rush.

Electronic spending in the city through the Paymark network last month was up 3.6 per cent on the previous December - from $125.3 million to $129.8m. The number of transactions increased from 2.47 million to 2.62 million (6.1 per cent).

The network processes more than 75 per cent of retail electronic transactions in New Zealand. Paymark spokesman Paul Whiston said Kiwis remained cautious in tight economic conditions.

April 19-24 is Spring Cleanup Week in Mandan.

The diaries start in Africa in the late Forties, where young Rosemary Kirkcaldy is a convent schoolgirl with dreams of becoming a dancer and actress. We're fast-forwarded to a small Scottish rep theatre where the leading man is tall, handsome and remarkably persistent. Despite being engaged to someone called Nigel back home, Rosemary quickly succumbs to the charismatic Joss Ackland. Nine months after the wedding, the first of seven babies appears, and Rosemary finds herself embarking on an exhausting life of love and motherhood on the breadline. At one point things get so bad that Joss is reduced to working as a farmhand.

In 1963, tragedy struck when a fire engulfed the family's London home. After saving her children, a pregnant Rosemary had to jump from an upstairs window and broke her back. Told by the doctors she would never walk again, she left Stoke Mandeville hospital 18 months later with only a slight limp.

From this point, it was clear Rosemary would never resume her acting career. Instead her diaries describe days full of enjoyable domesticity. Children charge in and out, there are meals to prepare and distinguished friends such as John Mortimer to entertain. WHEN Heartbeat star Jason Durr told his then fouryear-old daughter she was going to have a twin brother and sister, there was one question he wasn't expecting. 'She said: "I'd like that, but could you make them older than me?"' he recalls.

'I guess she loved the idea of being the little girl in the house. We said: "No, I'm afraid you'll have to be the big sister." She thought for a few seconds before concluding that would be fine.'

Four months ago, Jason's wife Kate duly provided her with twin baby siblings Felix and Velvet, who are now sitting on Jason's lap. Felix is placid. Velvet is yowling at the top of her voice. So far, so charming. But the story of their conception is remarkable, even by modern standards.

Jason is the genetic father of the babies, who were conceived through a U.S. egg donor. When Kate and Jason, best known as PC Mike Bradley in the police drama, decided to extend their family, they imagined they would conceive again easily. After all, there had been no problem with their daughter Blossom.

MEANWHILE, the family had decided to decamp from their home in England to Hollywood, where Jason -- who carries an Irish passport as his mother hails from Monaghan -- had secured work on TV shows. When settled, Jason and Kate visited a fertility clinic in Los Angeles.

There they encountered a second setback. Kate was beginning a premature menopause. An IVF attempt using Jason's sperm to fertilise eggs taken from Kate failed, and at the end of the treatment the expert's prognosis was uncompromising.

'He said: "You can throw as much money, time and emotion at this issue as you like, but it isn't going to work," ' says Kate. The implications were stark. Kate and Jason would never be able to have another child that was genetically their own. Their options now were adoption, egg donation -- or just giving up.

'I went through a process of grieving,' says Kate. 'I maintained a facade of cheerfulness, but when a friend remarked how pragmatic I was being, Clip on charms I broke down. Afghan parliament rejects ex-warlord's nominee in cabinet

KABUL, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's parliament on Saturday rejected the nominee for the Ministry of Water and Power, Mohammad Ismael Khan, who is former warlord and the incumbent minister.

THREE men were "monstered" by a group of at least six in a serious street attack in central Invercargill in the early hours of Saturday morning, police said.

The men were attacked moments after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed in Gala St.

Sergeant Wing Ng said police were called to the scene just outside Rices Powerstore.

NEW DELHI: Two men, including an employee of a mobile company, were arrested for allegedly stealing close to 680 mobile phones from a company showroom, said police.

HEFEI, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese pharmaceutical company has been ordered to pay hefty compensation for dumping toxic chemical waste in rural areas..

This news-hungry trend is even more pronounced among men than women, with 51 percent of men versus 41.7 percent of women more interested. Taking account of those rating themselves "less interested" (6.7 percent of men versus 10.9 percent of women), the net margin of greater interest in the news is 44.3 percent for men and 30.8 percent of women. This gender skew pertains to all major fields of interest in the survey; higher net percentages of men than women rate themselves more interested.

The findings come from an online "mood monitor" survey of 388 Americans across the country that was commissioned by global integrated marketing communications agency Euro RSCG Worldwide in February 2010. MicroDialogue collected and analyzed the data.

Regarding their own local politics, a net 29.4 percent of men have become more interested, compared with 16.7 percent of women. Men even show a net increase in interest in the local politics of other areas (net 10.8 percent more), whereas women show a net decrease of interest (net 6.2 percent less). Moving the focus up to the politics of their own state, there's a surge of greater interest with net 47.9 percent more men and net 30.2 percent more women. In terms of the politics of other states, net 23.1 percent of men and 9.4 percent of women are more interested. There are clear, strong increases in interest for domestic politics in general, although the margin is far higher with men than with women (net 42.3 percent men versus net 24.5 percent women).

The Great Recession and head-spinning news from Wall Street have pushed economy and finance firmly center stage for Americans. Huge net margins of 63.4 percent of men and 52.1 percent of women rate themselves more interested in these topics than they were 12 to 18 months ago. Business and corporations have also come in for higher levels of interest, although they're far more of a guy thing: Net 42.3 percent of men are more interested, compared with net 16 percent of women.

It's no surprise that health care has garnered far more interest over the past 12 to 18 months. Among men, 67.6 percent are more interested, and among women 61.5 percent are more interested. What is surprising is that a small minority rate themselves less interested in the issue: 6.2 percent of men and 8.3 percent of women. This suggests some Americans have been turned off of the whole subject, despite--or perhaps because of--the health-care reform tug-of-war in Congress and across the media.

Although there are consistently higher percentages of men who are more interested in the big issues, there are consistently higher percentages of women who feel growing disapproval with the issues compared with 12 to 18 months ago.
